BS3001 CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN WORK & EMPLOYMENT

1. ‘Work is objectively becoming more pressurized and precarious, but still a source of meaning and attachment for many employees’ (Laaser and Karlsson 2021:15). Evaluate this statement using research evidence of occupational groups to assess the ‘crisis of work meanings’ debate.

2. The extent to which workers are able to exercise agency and shape identity constructions is informed by both workplace contexts and power resources. Examine this assertion.

3. Evaluate the extent to which dirty workers are able to accomplish successful stigma management and explain the conditions which constrain as well as enable these strategies based on the research evidence.

4. Assess whether employee ownership offers a panacea to the dysfunctional impact of contemporary capitalism on employee outcomes.

5. Examine how a moral economy approach helps us to explore the tensions between market and moral values to better explain the experience of contemporary work and employment by drawing on examples across the module.
